April 2010 - The weather cooperated and the sun shone down on the many children who came out to the 2nd Annual Cumberland Youngster’s Easter Egg Hunt. Currently Cumberland community newsletter, in partnership with the Cumberland Community Schools Society, with overwhelming support from local merchants and organizations pulled together a fabulous family event!
It was a community effort through and through, with Tarbell’s Cafe donating coffee for the adults, Carmie’s Café, the Village Bakery, and Comox Valley Bakehouse donating cookies and brownies for the youngsters, Seeds Market donating honey stix, and the Cumberland Road Thrift Store donating Easter baskets for the kids to carry their goodies in. Parent volunteers decorated the park, provided face painting, and lead a treasure hunt for older siblings. Fantastic music filled the air with Corwin Fox strumming a banjo, visiting Canadian folksinger Ragu Lokanathan on accordion, and Christina Zaenker playing cello. A surprise visit by the Easter Bunny, his friend Chili the lop-eared bunny, and a donkey named Bella delighted children and adults alike!
The hunt was held at the No.6 Mine Park in Cumberland, which is lovingly maintained by volunteers, making it a favorite Village children’s play and picnic spot. Admission to the hunt was by donation to the Food Bank and this year two wheelbarrows were filled to overflowing with donations!
The following generous community sponsors made sure that every child had something wonderful in their basket: Rotary Club of Cumberland Centennial, Cumberland Ready Mix, Cumberland OAP, Cumberland and District Credit Union, Village Hideaway Vacation Rental, Cumberland Legion, Dodge City Video, Cumberland Village Bakery, Carmie's Café & Catering, Dodge City Cycles, Seeds Food Market, Cumberland Dental Centre, Cumberland OAP, Wandering Moose Café, UROC, the Village of Cumberland, Pure Training, Principal Dirk den Otter, Patty and Bella, Al deJersey, Comox Valley Bakehouse and of course the Easter Bunny’s helper - Dark Side Chocolates!
Generosity, old-fashioned community spirit, and the efforts of parent volunteers made for a fantastic day in the park for everyone. Cumberland is a little Village with a lot of heart!
